Private Hypermediacy

Installation on Overhead Projector

Installation on Overhead Projector
2005

Venue: Art of the Overhead, Basement, Kopenhagen, Denmark
Organized by Kristoffer Gansing and Linda Hilfling

In contrast to analogue media, computers and software applications are considered unstable tools. A network connection, an audio-visual assemblage or a simple software is more likely to break down than previous mechanical and electronic devices, such as the typewriter or telegraph.

In addition, since digital mediums are more complex in a technical sense, they are usually treated as black boxes, thus the average user has no idea how they operate and how they can be fixed. ’Private Hypermediacy’  aims to reflect on the sensibility of such electronic black boxes and the communication between human and computer in such breakdown situations.

The unreliability of digital technology is exposed here through the usage of a robust medium, the overhead projector. Visitors can customize their own system error on the overhead projector with transparencies: software and OS interfaces, error messages.
